What Is a CRNA?
CRNAs are advanced practice nurses with specialized graduate-level education in anesthesia care. In the state of Iowa, nurse anesthetists are licensed independent providers of anesthesia.
Today, more than 50,000 nurse anesthetists. As advanced practice nurses, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) administer approximately 43 million anesthetics in the United States each year. In addition, CRNAs administer anesthesia for all types of surgical cases, from the simplest to the most complex. CRNAs are the primary anesthesia professionals in rural America.
In Iowa CRNAs are the sole providers in nearly 100 percent of the rural hospitals.
For more than 100 years, CRNAs have worked in every setting in which anesthesia is delivered. This includes traditional hospital surgical suites and obstetrical delivery rooms, ambulatory surgical centers, and the offices of dentists, podiatrists, and plastic surgeons.

Our mission is to advance excellence in anesthesia care by meeting our members’ needs and increasing public awareness that CRNA’s provide Iowan’s high quality anesthesia services in all practice settings.
Following a call to meet in conjunction with the Iowa Hospital Association in Des Monies, the Iowa Association of Nurse Anesthetists was organized on April 23, 1940. IANA was later incorporated in 1971 and is part of the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists.
As the sole anesthesia providers in almost 75% of Iowa’s community hospitals, CRNA’s are a vital to the goal of Iowa being the healthiest state in the country!
